Self care habits that have changed my life

Self-care, " a word that sounds very fancy." Self-care is not only fancy but very crucial for our physical, mental and emotional well being. You should not neglect self-care because self-care is important to maintain a healthy relationship with yourself. It boosts your confidence and produces positive feelings. It makes you more productive and organized. It helps you to live a stress-free life and this list of self-care benefits is never-ending.

Self care habits that have changed my life

I am as a person was not dedicated to myself for a few months ago. I did not take care of my self at all until I became a depression patient. Depression worked as an awakening alarm for me. I wanted a happy and stress-free life. I thought that I have to do something for the sake of my life. So, the first thing that came to my mind, "I have to take care of myself."

I adopted some habits that not only help me to come out of depression but also made me a positive person. It was very tough for me to follow self-care habits consistently in the starting but as you know consistency is the key to success. Now, these habits have become part of my life and, I have not to force my self to follow these.

Here, I am going to tell you my self-care habits that make me a completely different person - from a depressed person to a highly positive and happy person.

1. Drinking Warm Water:

The first thing that I do after waking up is to drink warm water. I feel very dehydrated after waking up. So, I drink as much water as I can. Drinking water on an empty stomach is very good for our health too. Warm water helps us to cleanse our body and also good for our skin and hair.

I prefer to drink water without brushing my teeth. It was not easy for me to do so initially. But I have read somewhere that there are good bacterias in our morning saliva that can cure many diseases. So, I also started to do so.

2. Meditation:

Next habit that I have adopted is to meditate daily. I usually meditate in the morning because there is great peace in the morning. Meditation helps me to get rid of stress. I am able to keep my mind calm even in the worst situation due to meditation. It makes me a positive person. When I did not meditate, I was used to sticking to the past and could not be able to enjoy my present life. But, now I am living in the present. It makes me think like past has been gone and the future is not yet come then why to worry?

Initially, it was tough for me to meditate. I was irritated because of lack of concentration. So, I started to do a guided meditation. I used the headspace app but did not fully depend on it. I use it for a few days to learn the proper techniques of meditation. After learning the techniques, I started to do meditation without any app.

3. Morning pages:

Some people call it writing a general but I call it morning pages because I write these pages in the morning. After doing meditation, I pick up my notebook and start to write what is going on my subconscious. I did not think about what to write. I write everything that comes in my mind at that time. This habit of mine helps me to become my own friend. I can talk to myself with the help of these morning pages. Now, I do not need anyone to tell what is in my mind. Normally, I write about:
  • The things happened in the past day
  • What I have to do in the present day and
  • Some affirmations.

4. Workout at the gym:

Working out at the gym is my all-time favorite hobby. But I had to stop doing this for more than 2 years due to some reasons. And, the result was that my weight was increased. I had gain 18 kg weight in only 4 months and that is enough to lose my confidence. Also, my doctor told me that if you want to cure your depression then try to do some physical exercises. I followed his advice and joined the gym again. I work out daily for 2 to 3 hours. I am feeling great changes in my health after adopting this habit. I feel more healthy and also reduced 11 kg in three months. This is a great achievement for me. In addition, Exercising also helps my body to relieve stress hormones.

5. Reading books:

Books are very helpful for our personal growth. I like to read books especially non-fiction books. I tried to read books but was not regular with this habit. This year my resolution is to read at least three books in a month. So, I have started to read 10 pages of a book before going to sleep. This helps me to improve my sleeping pattern. Reading has a significant number of other benefits too like stress reduction, vocabulary expansion, knowledge, better writing skills, improved concentration, entertainment, etc.

6. Limit social media time:

I am a content creator so I have to use social media. I was always browsing my social media accounts to promote my contents. I was so addicted to it. I knew that I am playing with my health by doing so but I could not stop. I decided to limit the use of social media when my migraine pain restarted. Now, I set a time when to use facebook, twitter, etc. I do not scroll my phone the whole day. I keep two hours to promote my contents on social media. This habit helps me to be more productive to complete the other tasks because now I have a lot of time in a day.

7. Stop using the phone before going to bed:

Using the phone before bed causes your brain to stay awake. In addition, the blue light emitted from the phone effects negatively on our sleeping pattern. It is the main reason for restless sleep. I stopped using the phone for one hour before going to bed. As a result, I got quality time for my self. I used this time to read books and learn something new. I also sleep better at night after choosing this habit.

8. Eat healthy food:

I always try to eat healthy food but now I incorporate more green vegetables and fruits in my diet. Vegetables and fruits are important sources of many nutrients like potassium, fiber, folic acid, and vitamins. These are also very low in fat and calories. I eat boiled vegetables every day. I do not only reduce my weight but also got good skin and strong hair by eating healthy food items.

9. Limit sugar intake:

It is very hard to overcome the habit of eating sugar for a sweet loving person like me. I always craved for sweets. I could eat sweets at every meal. I knew that too much sugar is bad for me but I was unable to stop eating. But I have to do this to get my fitness back. So, I switched to healthier alternatives. I used to have jaggery or raw honey whenever I feel the craving for sugar. Protein also helps to suppress the sweet craving. I started to eat roasted soya seeds and it actually worked for me.

In addition to these habits, I also reduced my caffeine intake, try to live in the present, get a good eight hours of sleep. These self-care habits really impacted my life in a positive way. Tell me your self-care habits and the habits that you want to change.

  7. Great tips on self care. I initially didn't get time to take care of myself and my health just got out of hand. The realization that if I ever were bed ridden or too sick, those I sacrifice my time for will not be there all the time for me. That realization helped me to kick start a daily 'me' program where I make sure I do things for me, exercise, cook healthy meals for me, read and enjoy nature as that calms my mind.
